Poplar Creek Tournament Report After a span of 240 days, traveling 1,044 miles, and playing on ten golf courses, the Fog City Linksters concluded the 2008 season at venerable Poplar Creek Golf Course.
The positives about playing Poplar on a Sunday are that the loud reports of gunfire are absent because the shooting range is closed and the abundant geese vacate the fairways and fly off to visit their gaggle of friends in other neighborhoods. The ongoing freeway traffic noise and roar of the landing jets is just an accepted part of playing golf in the urban ambiance of the Peninsula.
Despite greens that appeared to be invaded by marauding raccoons foraging for grubs, David Cook managed to putt his way to three birdies and capture first place honors with a low gross of 85 and net 69. John Kirby continued his fine play and came up only one stroke short of the lead. Bob Brandi’s strong back nine enabled him to capture a third place finish.
The Linksters managed to accurately land golf balls on the greens of four par three holes. Settling nearest the flags were Allan Taggart, Gene Mellor, Bob Brandi, and Dennis Brady. Each received a bonus point and $20 gift certificates at the Pro Shop for their accurate shots.
The Skins pool raised $130 in prize money which was modestly shared by John Kirby (2), David Cook (2), Bob Brandi, Gary Barsocchini, Charlie Barca, and Allan Taggart. Lefty Gene “The Lasher” Mellor launched a rocket on the 18th hole that rolled a few feet past Bob Brandi’s bash to secure the coveted Long Drive Award which reduced his entrance fee by $45 and made him a happy man.
The Linksters express their gratitude to Bob Brandi for serving as Event Chairman. Thanks also to Phil Lavin for volunteering to organize the Skins Game and Longest Drive Contest.
Final 2008 Tournament Standings Charlie Barca’s impressive wire-to-wire leading performance concluded with being bestowed the official title of Fog City Linksters 2008 Best Golfer. Charlie got off to a super start during the first four Tournaments by securing two first place finishes and one second place spot. He then doggedly hung on to remain ahead of the field and clinch the award prior to the final Tournament.
The battle for second place was much more competitive and wasn’t decided until the final event of the season. Thanks to a second place finish, John Kirby ended up edging out David Cook by a mere 1.2 point spread. Both David and John also finished in the top three last year. As you know, the overall winner pockets $200, second place is worth $100, and it pays $50 to Show. It should be noted that all of the top three Linksters participated in the full event schedule.
Even though Charlie dominated the Best Golfer statistics, there was considerable parity among the Linksters during Tournament play. The following members recorded first place finishes during the 2008 Season: Charlie Barca (2), David Cook, Allan Taggart, Dennis Brady (tie), Gary Barsocchini, Pat Rogers, Paul Skarphol, and Gene Mellor.
Additional accolades are in order for Steve Sarnecky and Pat Rogers. Steve’s best tournament score average earned him the coveted Low Gross Award and Pat’s ball striking progress resulted in a well deserved Most Improved Player Award. Both winners received $50 for their accomplishments.
Congratulations to all the winners!
Dinner and Awards Banquet The group dinner at Dominic’s provided an upbeat ending to another successful golfing season. Everyone enjoyed the appetizers, salad, main entrée, and complimentary wine. Not exactly a destination restaurant, but good food for the price.
Prior to the start of dinner service, an informal general meeting was conducted by President Joe Tomsic so that members had an opportunity to evaluate the season, make suggestions for improvement, and initiate additional comments relative to the topic (or not).
Several interesting ideas were presented that mainly centered on possible methods for increasing membership, improving attendance at tournaments, and restructuring elements of the present point system. All agreed that distributing Joe’s workload by sharing tournament responsibilities through individual Event Chairman worked extremely well and will be continued next year.
If you have specific suggestions relative to improving the Fog City Linksters, please email Joe so your ideas can be considered prior to next year’s final planning. I know we are all relieved and appreciative that Joe has committed to continue on as President for the 2009 Season.
Fog City 2009 Membership Application Due December 15 Please remember to send in your Membership Application by December 15 so that Joe can initiate arrangements with potential golf courses and develop the 2009 Event Schedule. Everyone is encouraged to try and recruit members in order to maintain the viability of the Club. The 2009 Application Form can be found on the Home Page of the website.
Note that the form should be sent to Joe Tomsic at the address listed on the Application. By the way, there is no truth to the rumor that next year mandatory urine samples will be required in order to test for performance enhancing drugs.
Website During the Off Season The website will continue to be available online and the monthly Indexes as well as other periodic updates will be posted as they become available. If there is any major news, an email notification will be sent to all members. If you really feel nostalgic and have nothing better to do, you can peruse the Newsletter Archives and vicariously relive past seasons.
I hope all the Linksters have a healthy and enjoyable winter and are able to rejoin Fog City for another season of golf, enjoyment, frustration, and social camaraderie.
